During the planting of a lemon tree, you discovered a old rusty metal box. Inside the box, there's a website address. How is it possible that within something this old there's a note regarding present day technology? We are ready to discover further.
The format of the puzzles were all either in text or jpg. Once you figure out the answer you can enter it on the website in order to move forward to the next puzzle. You'll definitely encounter times when you'll need present day technology like emailing, Googling and QR code scanning. If you get stuck, there are hints that'll help you along. The puzzles were quite different in terms of concept from the ones we've played before. Some were actually quite challenging. One puzzle was quite a stretch for us mainly because the wording of the question was confusing (perhaps from the translation?). After decoding, we were still unable to corollate that with the solution that they were asking for. Some puzzles might be easier to visualize if you are able to print the pages out. The count down at the end definitely added that urgency feel of an escape room. The twist to the story line also was added finish. It's definitely worth checking it out especially when it's a free game.
Game: The Attic
Genre: Horror
Date Played: 10/12/2020
Difficulty (based on 2 players): 8/10
Size of Team: Up to 6 devices
Time: 60 Minutes
In the 1950s, a wealthy family gave birth to a girl whom they named Carolina. Since she was born with issues that was an embarrassment to the family, she was locked up in the attic. Those who dared to enter the attic never came out...Are you up for the challenge?
This is a digital point-n-click game. There's an actual countdown clock so your game will end when 60 minutes is up. You'll get a total of 4 hints so use them wisely. We played this game over a video conferencing platform and used it mainly as a communication tool. You can purchase one code and both enter the game at the same time. The game will be synced in the sense that if you entered a password for a lock, it'll open for the other players as well.
The graphics and sound were beautifully designed. There were definitely moments of jump scares that got me to scream a little (but you'll probably be fine. I'm just scared of everything). It definitely helped to have a teammate as there were a good amount of areas that needed to be searched and you'll save time by having one teammate try out the passwords when the other tries to solve the puzzles by putting together all the clues that you found during the search. Definitely take notes as you go through the rooms. It'll save you a lot of time (which you'll need since there's a good amount of puzzles to go through) of not having to click back and forth to the same areas. The only thing we thought was confusing was when we tried out the hint system. The wording of some of them were quite hard to understand and we didn't really get to use it to the fullest potential. Also each puzzle had a three tier hint system. If you want to use 3 out of the 4 hints on the same puzzle, make sure to click out of it and then click back in in order to get the next hint. You will not be able to click to get the next hint if you are in the actual puzzle. This game had a lot of similarities to a real escape room and we really enjoyed it. For the price, it's well worth the value.
Game: Pirate Treasure
Genre: Pirate, Adventure
Date Played: 11/16/2020
Difficulty (based on 2 players): 3.5/10
Size of Team: Unlimited
Time: 60 Minutes
ARRR! We are on a journey to find the hidden treasure buried by captain Black Cloak. Can we make it out alive?
We've always enjoyed Juan's games as they are great with the graphics and the game's operating system never gives us any issues. You are able to log in as a team and play the together over a video conferencing platform. But if you opened a lock, remember to have your other teammates refresh the page to have this change reflect in their game as well. The option to turn on/off the music was brilliant as we found that for games that could be played as a team, it's essential to be able to turn off the music when the team would like to discuss about the puzzles and sometimes the background music could be distractive. This point-n-click adventure felt a lot shorter than the Attic. We took our time and made it out in 20 minutes or so. This is great for beginner puzzlers or kids. There was about 5-6 puzzles. We were surprised when it ended as we wanted to explore more of the island! Hopefully there'll be a sequel!
(If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from "ESCAPETHEROOMers"!)
