A professor at a local college is the prime suspect of the murder of three fellow colleagues but he has gone missing. There is a rumor that he and his victims may have been involved in the occult and, while your supervisor is a little skeptical on that theory, you’ve been tasked you to investigate the missing professor’s home to see if you can discover his whereabouts.

"The Professor of the Occult" follows a point-n-click adventure using a real-life room in 360. You receive a debrief from your supervisor before entering the office of missing professor to begin your exploration. If something requires further inspection it will faintly glow when you hover your mouse over it. In addition to the puzzles there are also a series of four cassette tapes that can provide helpful clues while also building the narrative during your progression in the game. I personally found the narrative to be interesting as gave a backstory to what led up to this moment. The video clips from your supervisor were also quite entertaining!

This game is best played using a single shared screen between players in order to allow you to listen to key audio clips and solve puzzles jointly. This also ensures everyone is on the same page as certain aspects of the game become inaccessible after key points. There is no outside additional research required for this game, but I recommend having a pen and paper handy as a few puzzles require some organization.

This particular game utilizes quite a variety in puzzles that stem from traditional puzzles we’ve all seen. These are more longer style puzzles, so it still takes time to go through them. I enjoyed how these puzzles encouraged my group to work together but if I was to complete this alone, I would have seen some these as a little tedious. The puzzles utilized the space of the game well by adding a lot of movement to the puzzles, even if it was something as simple has having players click and drag pieces around to help visualize their solutions. I also found a couple puzzles where the solution seemed out of place with this occult style and ended up feeling simple. The ending itself was unique experience and I like how it pushed for active participation. As enthusiasts we completed this game in less than half the time allotted for this game, so this game skews towards new players to the digital escape world in terms of difficulty.

"The Professor of the Occult" provides an intriguing narrative and a series of traditional puzzles that work well for a group event but, independently, they are things you have seen before. I think this is a good choice for when you get the group together and are looking for puzzles that encourage your group to actively collaborate. If you’re looking for something a little shorter with a neat memento to keep afterwards, I recommend checking out Puzzles Escape Games’ "Coffee Cup Puzzles"!
