You and your friend are archeologists in search of treasure and adventure. One of you is hefty and strong while the other is slight and agile. You make a great team and are both passionate about the study of ancient Egypt. Ancient scrolls and local legends tell you that the pyramid you are exploring contains a secret chamber! Can you find the secret room and the relics and treasures that lie within?

“A treasure in Egypt” is a short demo game that is free to play. It’s presented as the first chapter of a longer game that is not yet available. The game is played online and is designed for two people. Starting the game is easy. The first player simply shares a code so the second player can join the same game. Each player picks a character, Jack or Lili, then enters the game. You’ll need to also connect via online meeting or phone (zoom or whatever) so you can talk to each other. Hints are always available for whatever puzzles you are currently working on. The phrasings in some of the hints are unclear and the explanations of the solutions aren’t enlightening, but the hint system might give you a shove in the right direction if you get stuck. The game is set in a couple of rooms within an Egyptian pyramid. The visuals are presented in a cartoonish style and are cute and inviting. We encountered a technical issue while playing that impeded our progress. A mechanism in one of the puzzles didn’t work for one of our players, possibly due to a platform or browser incompatibility.

The structure of the game play requires the two players to work together because each player has access to different areas and different parts of the puzzles. There are three main puzzles to solve in “A Treasure in Egypt”—an audio puzzle, a collaborative maze, and a pattern identification puzzle. All three puzzles feature a set of hieroglyphics and are input into the same lock. The reuse of the hieroglyphics makes it difficult to determine which elements go into each puzzle as you explore the game space, and some of the hieroglyphic representations are hard to distinguish from one another.

The technical issues we encountered left us a little frustrated, but we enjoyed the collaborative structure and premise of the game and are curious to see how it develops. For the low, low price of $0, you and a friend can easily give it a try.
