📖 THE STORY
After a string of criminals begin dying of unexplained heart attacks around the world, the FBI are desperate to catch this killer of killers, known only as “Kira.” Your team have infiltrated the bedroom of Light Yagami, a Japanese high school student who has become the prime suspect in this case. Unfortunately, you are ambushed and locked into the room and now have only an hour to find proof of Kira’s identity and escape the room before Light returns…and adds your name to his book.
Please note: Death Note is inspired by the popular Japanese manga and anime series of the same name. No prior information of the series is required to play.
🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE
For those who have watched or read Death Note there are many fun Easter Eggs to catch. There were quite a few times where my friends stopped to appreciate the connections.
The puzzles in here use a lot of observation and information hunting which is excellent for co-operation between members. It created an engaging environment as two people found the pieces that worked together and rushed over to put together the solution.
There were quite a few “aha” moments that came from looking at things from a different perspective. They were the best part of the game and were well paced to keep player momentum going.
The flow of the puzzles and clues worked to guide players around the room smoothly. Once a puzzle was completed there was always a next step so you never were stuck not knowing the next goal.
Clever use of objects enhanced the experience and encouraged members to be hands on in the investigation. Everything you find on your journey, EVERYTHING, has importance to the next puzzle..
🧩 MISSED THE MARK
The introduction dialogue was a little quiet and monotone, but the information is important (especially towards the end of the dialogue) as it provides goals and clues for the room. This information can easily be missed and without the guidance you may more easily lose focus of the order of puzzles you need to solve.
🏹 TAKE A SHOT?
In "Death Note", a little goes a long way with this seemingly straightforward room. As we embarked, we kept finding new pieces of information that kept us going and changed our path that we enjoyed. There were a few times we got too focused on all the available material in front of us, but our GM was helpful at providing the perfect nudge. The “aha” moments in this room were thrilling and I thought this game provided enough of them for everyone in my group to get that satisfaction of discovery. I especially love the moment when you discover the importance of a particular object you come across in the room. This tailors itself more towards fans of the manga/anime but friends of those who haven’t seen or read Death Note will still leave with plenty of fun puzzling.
